Amanda Brugel

(February 27 2010 - Toronto ON) Pointe Claire is a sleepy community on the part of Montreal called"the West Island. The West Island, to those who have never heard of it, is a vast area that extends from Lachine up to the west. Amanda Brugel was born there, but her time within the city was brief. Brugel was born in Courtice in the vicinity of Oshawa Ontario. She wanted to become a professional dancer but because of a huge development spurt, she exceeded the size of her dance partner. In an article from The Toronto Star she admitted In heels I'm 6'1 inch. When I grew out of male companions, I began to stop. The former dancers usually turn to acting, and Brugel wasn't an exception. Drama teacher at her high school encouraged Brugel in her direction that she required. It was her teacher who advised her to audition for the role of Anne for their school's annual production. A teacher suggested that she take on a part in the annual school production. This resulted in being awarded a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theater Program and graduated with an Associate of Fine Arts degree in 2000. In the 20+ years since then, Brugel has landed roles on more than 60 productions across both screens, attracting the most attention after she was cast as Rita in the award-winning show The Handmaid's Tale (pictured below). Brugel was the sole Canadian cast member for the season 1 of the series. She was not seen much.
